SAN FRANCISCO - Lava Mae is a San Francisco, California non-profit organization that has refurbished four old public transit buses into a fleet of mobile shower facilities for the homeless. Inside each vehicle are changing areas, showers and toilets providing approximately 2,000 showers per week to the city's hundreds of homeless. Key to achieving Lava Mae's mission “to deliver dignity and unlock opportunity for those experiencing homelessness — one mobile shower at a time” has been a deal with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission to utilize city water from fire hydrants.
